| YOSIGO
Working under the artist name Yosigo, José Javier Serrano (b. 1981, Donostia),
a young photographer based in San Sebastian, Barcelona, reinterprets ordinary sceneries and locations through his distinct visual language to invent completely new images.
In particular, he varies his handling of light with each subject, which has allowed him to further sophisticate his photographic language.
His sensational palette and composition gradually gained attention,
and his works were first introduced to the Korean audience in Photographs by YOSIGO: Holiday Memories, a 2021 exhibition at Ground Seesaw Seochon.
Coinciding with the COVID pandemic and a time of restricted tourism,
the exhibition drew over 400,000 visitors — many seeking to satisfy their longing for travel — and significantly raised Yosigo’s profile in Korea.
Yosigo took his artist name from a poem his father had written for him back when he had first expressed his interest in photography.
The poem described the importance of practicing “yo sigo [Spanish: I shall follow],” emphasizing that one must never settle and must always be on the move.
At the time, Yosigo was completely at a loss for what he wanted to do and felt that he had no talent in either design or photography, but his father’s poem gave him courage.
Now, Yosigo says that you must always trust your instincts and never lose heart even when things don’t go as planned.
The artist name, Yosigo, tells the story of a father encouraging his son, and the son responding to his father’s support with a strong conviction.
