In Tainan, Taiwan, there are no bike lanes and hardly any sidewalks, so I had no choice but to ride my bicycle on the scooter road. I raced along the road alongside scooters, picking up more and more speed. As noon approached, the sunlight poured down ever more intensely, and between the dark evergreen trees that never shed their leaves, the light fell in circles upon the ground.
