Werner’s love for plants runs deep—rooted in a family history marked by resilience and quiet passion. His grandfather was an avid gardener, and before him, Werner’s great-grandfather had studied botany under a professor while interned in a concentration camp. From those unlikely beginnings, a generational affection for nature began to grow.
Many of Werner’s childhood memories center around his grandfather—Opa—and a garden. He recalls long afternoons spent learning how to care for flowers, distinguish weeds from wild growth, and keep the soil alive and healthy.
Among the many plants in Opa’s modest garden, it was the Marigolds that left the deepest impression. Hardy and vibrant, they flourished under the harsh South African sun, needing little water yet blooming in brilliant shades of orange and yellow. Even once cut, they remained fresh in a vase for weeks—resilient, enduring, and quietly beautiful.
For Werner, the Marigolds became a living metaphor for his grandfather. A tough, old-school German who had survived a difficult life, Opa nevertheless possessed a soul full of gentleness and grace. Like the color yellow—and like the man himself—the flowers embodied a kind of happiness that lingered.
In this work, Werner captures that spirit. He paints a small figure, perhaps a reflection of his grandfather, taking photos of something just beyond the frame—perhaps a sunlit field of flowers—set against a bright yellow background. It is a tribute to memory, legacy, and the quiet strength that blooms even under the harshest light.
