The strange scenes created by children wearing animal masks may appear fantastical, but beneath the surface lie a cynical critique of contemporary society and the anxious emotions of our time. The Western dualistic worldview that separated humans from nature and regarded them as isolated beings has produced human-centered desires that now threaten the sustainability of life itself. Lee’s Masquerade series reinterprets this worldview through the lens of the numinous (Rudolf Otto), forming a fantastical realism that illuminates the endless desires of modern civilization through the myth of Noah’s Ark.
