Fire has long held a central place in Lee’s practice. In his childhood play, fire was always present at the threshold between creation and mystery. What fascinated him was not fire’s usefulness, but its power to make solid objects disappear in an instant while flickering like a living thing—a mystery beyond reality that held both fascination and fear. Just as the fire Prometheus gave to humanity made civilization possible while also carrying the power of destruction, fire has repeatedly appeared in religious language as an ambivalent archetype, holding truth and salvation, desire and destruction at once. In the Prometheus series within Masquerade, children once again hold the fire handed down by the world of adults, standing at the threshold of tomorrow.
