In front of a café lined with potted plants, a black cat was eating from a bowl of food. It was a smoking-permitted café, but since it was early morning, I was the only customer, and it was pleasant. The owner was a middle-aged man of large build who, despite a somewhat intimidating appearance, moved with great care. I sipped my Calpis and thought about the black cat.
