In Public Pool, artist Werner reflects on an unexpected source of inspiration from his time living in London. While walking through the city, he often found his gaze drawn downward—to the ground beneath his feet. Among the many details of urban life, it was the uniquely designed manholes that caught his eye. Rectangular in shape, with a smaller rectangle embedded within, they stood out from any he had seen elsewhere in the world.
The striking simplicity of this form stayed with him. Later, while preparing for his exhibition in Seoul, Werner returned to this visual memory as the foundation for a final work in his WET collection. He adopted the composition of a rectangle within a rectangle, transforming a piece of everyday infrastructure into a thoughtful study in spatial tension and human presence.
Though the decision felt risky, the result proved deeply rewarding. The balance between positive and negative space, combined with the rhythm of closely scattered figures, brought a surprising sense of harmony.
Public Pool exemplifies Werner’s ability to find beauty and structure in the overlooked, and to translate the mundane into something meditative, intentional, and quietly powerful.
